Australia have won the first Ashes Test by two wickets on the fifth day after a nail-biting finish in Edgbaston on Tuesday.

After the victory, the Aussies lead the five-match series 1-0.

While chasing the target of 281 runs, Australia were 54 runs short to the target with just two wickets in hands when their skipper Pat Cummins walked in to bat. The right-handed pulled off a stunning contest by scoring a match-winning knock of 44 runs including four boundaries and two maximums.

Cummins stood like a rock-solid mountain and helped his team win the Test after taking them out from a difficult stage. Before Cummins' arrival, there was only one percent chance of winning for Australia.

Usman Khawaja was named player of the match for his heroics in both the first and the second innings. He scored a remarkable knock of 141 runs in the first innings and helped the Aussies avoid a collapse. In the second innings, he was once again top scored with 65 off 197.

Australia started the final day of the first Ashes Test with 174 more runs to score. Scott Boland and Khawaja resumed the overnight score.

Boland was soon taken out by Stuart Broad, who in the last session of day four, removed two of Australia’s powerhouses - Marnus Labuschagne, the number one player in Test rankings, and 'Mr. reliable' Steve Smith for just 13 and six runs respectively.

Travis Head fell prey to Moeen Ali as he walked back to the pavilion after scoring 14 off 24 while Cameroon Green was bowled by Ollie Robinson. Alex Carey could not score more than 20 runs after losing his wicket to Joe Root.

Earlier, England were all-out for 273 runs in their second inning on day four.

Cummins and Nathan Lyon caused havoc for the English batters as both of them bagged four wickets each.

Joe Root, who resumed the batting for England on the fourth day along with Ollie Pope, went back to the pavilion after scoring 46 runs.

It must be noted that Root scored 11,168 runs in Test cricket before finally being stumped in a Test for the first time.

Australia were all-out for 386 runs in their first innings on day three after the English skipper Ben Stokes took the cricket world by surprise after declaring their first innings at 393-8.

Joe Root remained unbeaten as he scored 118 runs courtesy of seven fours and four sixes.
